By now I’m sure you’ve seen the commercial of the young lady in a hurry to head out that when she gets out of the shower, she sprays something on her skin, jumps in her cloths and she’s gone. Wake up super late one morning and you can relate. The commercial is for Vaseline’s Spray Lotion and what’s good for women (in this case) is good for us men, too.
Vaseline’s collection of men’s grooming products carries a 6.5 oz aluminum can of spray lotion. I gave it a test run one day after getting out of the shower, and was impressed at how well it worked. Utilizing compressed air, lotion is released with ease. Once applied to my skin, I rubbed it in like I would with lotion and it absorb very quickly. Juggling a few things before I myself had to leave the house, my attention drifted for a few minutes. Before I knew it, however, this super light, masculine scented lotion had my skin feeling moisturized without the greasy after feeling that some lotions leave behind.
Another plus for this one is the can’s design is very well thought out. It feels good in the hand and the nozzle is a twist-lock, which prevents spills. For those of you that deliberate what grooming products to take with you to the gym, you’ll appreciate these little details.

Men can be fiercely loyal. When we find something we like, there’s no separating us. Take for instance my love of sweatpants. Over the years I’ve only had a few and I wore them to shreds. The most recent pair I was forced to part with had holes in both pockets but I loved them.
The same is true with grooming products. When it works, it’s hard to try anything else. As someone that loves to try new things, I still find myself using some of the same products. Lately, however, I felt the desire to use a new shaving cream so I blind bought a jar of The Body Shop’s Maca Root Shave Cream and I’m hooked.
To be completely honest, I reached into my pockets for this one because it was at an irresistible price. At $12, how could I go wrong? Nevertheless, what I observed before using it made the decision easier. Upon opening the tester, I noticed immediately its pleasant scent that reminded me of a barbershop. (The added chemicals from scent, however, could be a reason for concern…more on that in a bit) I also noticed its light and creamy texture, which is usually a good sign that it’ll build a nice lather.
From the very first shave, it lathered up beautifully. I didn’t notice the scent all that much and after more than 10 uses, I haven’t experienced any dryness or irritation. My face has felt incredibly soft and hydrated. Chalk that up to its use of Brazilian Nut Oil and Sesame Oil. What really impresses me about this shave cream is how close my shaves have been. I shave every day to avoid ingrown hairs but while I’m using this cream, when I’m ready for my next shave, my face feels like it can skip a day and I have. On one occasion, my wife ran her hand across my face and asked, “Did you just shave?” I said why and she replied, “Your face is so smooth.” While that may seem like it was taken right out of a commercial, it shocked me because she never mentions that sort of stuff. But I noticed it myself and it’s amongst the reasons why I think you should grab a jar for yourself. If you need another reason, consider this – a quick dab of your badger brush into the cream will produce a rich, frothy lather. At that rate, you’ll be sitting on this shave cream for a long time. The return on investment will continue yielding benefits.

It’s hard to believe it was 1995 when Jean Paul Gaultier released his first fragrance, Le Male. I’m sure he didn’t realize then that as of today, every 6 seconds a bottle is sold somewhere in the world. Well such is the case and this past Friday in conjunction with the opening of the Jean Paul Gaultier exhibit at the Brooklyn museum, JPG was on hand to discuss its significance.
Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk takes a look at JPG’s avant-garde fashion designs and includes 140 haute couture and ready-to-wear pieces and costumes created for and worn by Beyonce and Madonna. The selected pieces are stunning and the talking lifelike mannequins, which were specially created for the exhibit, add a layer of specialness to this incredible experience.

To mark this occasion, Beaute Prestige International held an artist talk where the perfumer behind Le Male, Francis Kurkjdian and the exhibit’s curator Thierry-Maxime Loriot discussed how the scent was created and the influence JPG’s fashion had on it. The panel discussion was moderated by W Magazine’s Jane Larkworthy and included a multi-sensory exploration of the scent. The audience was given a booklet that included scented blotters that explained the layers that make up Le Male and the many advertising campaigns that went into creating the now iconic scent were presented. Listening to Kurkdjian explain his thought process in making the scent and smelling it along the way gave me a new appreciation for it. JPG’s surprise cameo made the experience even more special and he even stuck around for an impromptu autograph session afterwards. Attendees rushed the stage at the end of the talk for him to sign their booklets and I’m not ashamed to say, I was one of them.
Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk is an incredible experience and will be on hand at the Brooklyn Museum February 23, 2014. It is a must see.
Brooklyn’s Fragrance Scene Grows
Last week I attended a party given by Atelier Cologne in celebration of its third retail destination. The beloved brand founded by Sylvie Ganter and Christophe Cervasel can now be found in Brooklyn on Atlantic Avenue. Attendees sipped on champagne, nibbled on small bites and sampled a growing collection of superb fragrances.
Up until a few years ago, many thought Brooklyn was too far of a trek to be taken seriously. While that perception has changed in a big way, I was intrigued by Atelier’s decision to expand its retail concept into Brooklyn. At the first opportunity I had to speak with Gerard Camme, President of Atelier Cologne, I asked him about it and he flat out said, “why not.” He further explained, “We like to go where our client is. Our client is very fashionable, smart and worldly. They want to be a part of something different. That client is in Brooklyn in a big way.” Sounds like Brooklyn to me.
This is Atelier’s second store in New York. In August of 2011, they opened their first store in Nolita at 247 Elizabeth Street. In December of 2012 Atelier opened its first Paris boutique at 8 rue Saint-Florentin in the 1st arrondissment. Future store openings are planned in Shanghai, Hong Kong, Dubai and San Francisco.
