Travel Scents

SAMSUNG CSC

When I’m traveling, I try to look my best. I know comfort is what most people go for but to me, I feel presentation is everything and it may just lead to an upgrade or the benefit of the doubt. Similarly, I make sure I’m freshly showered and wearing a versatile scent.

When in close quarters, we can all become irritable. It’s crowded, hot and we just want to get to our destination. The last thing we want to deal with is someone sitting next to us smelling like (insert simile here). That said, when I’m traveling, I experience anxiety on what scents to bring. I don’t have access to my full range and I’m beholden to the few I do.

Above are a few fragrances that I’ve gravitated to time and time again for three reasons. 1) They have great longevity. When traveling, travel time can be unpredictable, especially with airline delays. If you’re on vacation or a conference, you’re typically on the go all day. Keeping that freshness is key and a good scent that lasts is important. 2) None of them are overly spicy. I have nothing against spicy scents; however, when in business or traveling, proceed with caution. In close quarters for long periods of time, it’s not something I want to smell and it can be off-putting. Play it safe. Speak for yourself…don’t let your scent do it for you. It might send the wrong message. 3) Last and certainly not least, TSA compliant. If you don’t want to check your bag, all of these fit carry-on rules.

If you don’t own any fragrances that are TSA compliant, pick up an atomizer that allows you to transfer your scent of choice to something that is. Travalo has one that’s easy to use and won’t break the bank.

Me + Atelier Cologne

Atelier Cologne

It’s been a while since I’ve pressed publish on FragrantMoments.net and with good reason, life has been getting in the way. I’ve thought of the words to throw down to explain it and the time has come.

Back in February, I accepted a full time gig at a global PR firm. The freelance thing was great but life was pressing for a steady check.

On June 10, 2014, my wife gave birth to a beautiful boy. We named him Mateo Lamont Bishop. We chose that middle name after my deceased brother. I wish with all my heart Lamont was here to meet my Prince and have brunch with us, cut his hair, and impart advice on him but a las the universe had a different plan.

When you add these two up, there leaves little time for blogging. I’ve been exploring another passion, photography, as a part of a campaign I’m fortunate to be a part of with Samsung, and you’ve seen some of that shared via Wordless Wednesdays. (Check my flickr feed when you have a moment).

Throughout all of this, however, the fragrance community has been really supportive checking in on me, inviting me out to events, etc. For that I’m thankful.

A few months back, one of those check ins, brightened my day. I received an email from Atelier Cologne asking me to participate in a newsletter they were putting together. With all I had going on, even that was iffy for me. Nevertheless, I have so much respect for the brand, I couldn’t turn it down.

What you see here is my part in that newsletter. Even more exciting, I’m in the midst of some well regarded fragrance aficionados.

Look for me in the November issue of Men’s Health magazine. I’m quoted on the topic of men’s fragrances.

I think the fragrance universe is pulling me back in. I’ll just have to add another ball to the juggling act.

I’m back baby!!! (Sort of ;-))

The Best of 2013

Now that Christmas is behind us, our sights are squarely set on ringing in the New Year. Bye bye 2013. Hello 2014. But, before I completely put this year behind me, it’s inevitable that I reflect on all that occurred.

I found that I tapped into my grooming side a bit more this year and you may have noticed that in the number of stories I published. I discovered some great products and just had to share them. Here are a few of my favorites:

Best of 2013 Grooming

Without question, the one item that overhauled my morning shave was the Fog Free Shower Mirror by ShaveWell. After searching for one and stumbling across this one, it was the best purchase I made in 2013. The return on investment continues to yield benefits.

Since I’m spending more time in hot showers, I’m paying extra attention to my skin and making sure I don’t allow my eczema to flair up. Rod’s Royal is a new men’s grooming line that’s been nothing short of impressive. Their body lotion is excellent. While it’s thick, which some guys run from, it quickly works it’s way into your skin leaving it feeling hydrated without feeling greasy.

One of the arguments often used to sway men to jump over to using safety razors is the dramatic price difference to using cartridges. Well you can now add to that Razor Shield by Hyd for Men. This solution, which is applied to your razor after every use, extends its life by protecting it against oxidation.  I extended the life of my razor or 25 days. Not bad for a product that costs $17.99.

Hailing from Toronto, Canada and made for vagabonds, gentlemen, and ruffians is Crown Shaving Company – an absolute gem of a brand. From the first time I applied their shaving cream to my face with my badger brush, I knew I was using something special. The way it hugged my face, the way my blade glided across my face with ease, it’s masculine scent and luxurious feel all had me hooked from day one. Hands down the best I’ve tried all year.

The surprise of the year came from Lucky Tiger’s Liquid Shave Cream. I was asked to review it for customshaving.com and I was skeptical from the beginning.  As I said in my review, “this liquid savior produced a thin sheet of slickness that rivals any of your trusted shave creams.”

In another year that saw a lot of fragrance releases, I fell in love with few. The ones that did catch my attention, however, I wore repeatedly.

Best of 2013 Fragrance

I’ve never been a fan of the signature scent thing but Royal Vintage is one scent that could make me change that. With its traditional masculine appeal, it’s a throwback sans the heavy bravado. What I particularly love is that it can be worn for any occasion. Once you try; you won’t want to leave home without.

Cumin can be a troubling note for many but it’s one of my favorites. Fate Man by Amouage serves a nice punch of cumin in it’s opening but the unexpected twists subsequent layers reveal made this a standout for me. The way saffron, mandarin, ginger, and animalic notes are balanced is impressive.

A citrus scent that’s clean, possesses depth and lasts all damn day is what you get from Thirdman’s collection of scents. Eau de Nomade was my scent this summer. I wore it daily and for good reason. As I said in my review, “…it’s Sicilian lemon, blood orange and cardamom (notes) are beautifully balanced and what you get is a zesty, slightly sweet and tantalizingly warm, scent that’s far from your average summer cologne.”

Sometimes you smell a scent and the first thing that comes to mind is this is interesting or this is boring. The first time I smelled Enigma by Roja Dove, I thought to myself, this deserves a well-fitted suit and freshly polished brogues. It possesses a refined masculinity. Its boozy slightly peppery opening is reminiscent of a firm handshake. But as it quiets down and the tobacco and ambergris comes to the forefront, it exudes a quiet confidence. I love how masculine this scent is. It’s familiar but its cadence is in a league of it’s own.

One of the scent subplots of 2013 was booze and it played a supporting role in Atelier Cologne’s Gold Leather. As oppose to cognac, they chose rum, which added to the sweet warmth of Gold Leather’s opening. What did it for me with this scent was the use of eucalyptus as it offered an unexpected freshness to the weighted notes of saffron, agarwood, leather, cedar and guaiac wood. The result – a unique take on leather scents defies the usual suspects. Personally I think it was one of the slept on scents of 2013.

There you have it – my best of 2013. To see what made the cut of my fragrant colleagues, please visit Eyeliner On A CatCandy Perfume BoyOlfactoria’s Travels and Persolaise.

Atelier Cologne Expands Into Brooklyn

Brooklyn’s Fragrance Scene Grows

Atelier Cologne in Brooklyn

Last week I attended a party given by Atelier Cologne in celebration of its third retail destination. The beloved brand founded by Sylvie Ganter and Christophe Cervasel can now be found in Brooklyn on Atlantic Avenue. Attendees sipped on champagne, nibbled on small bites and sampled a growing collection of superb fragrances.

Up until a few years ago, many thought Brooklyn was too far of a trek to be taken seriously. While that perception has changed in a big way, I was intrigued by Atelier’s decision to expand its retail concept into Brooklyn. At the first opportunity I had to speak with Gerard Camme, President of Atelier Cologne, I asked him about it and he flat out said, “why not.” He further explained, “We like to go where our client is. Our client is very fashionable, smart and worldly. They want to be a part of something different. That client is in Brooklyn in a big way.” Sounds like Brooklyn to me.

This is Atelier’s second store in New York. In August of 2011, they opened their first store in Nolita at 247 Elizabeth Street. In December of 2012 Atelier opened its first Paris boutique at 8 rue Saint-Florentin in the 1st arrondissment. Future store openings are planned in Shanghai, Hong Kong, Dubai and San Francisco.

Good Read..Scents of Spring

Image

With Daylight Savings going into effect this weekend, we’re all looking forward to spring. Those extra moments of sunlight will be celebrated with outdoor cocktails, breezy strolls and flirty innuendos. As a precursor to the season of relief, LifeStyle Mirror produced a piece about the Scents of Spring. They asked me to be a part and to my surprise, I’m in the midst of great company. My thoughts are alongside Chad Murawczyk of Min New York, David Moltz of DS & Durga, Francis Kurkdjian, Christopher Cervasel of Atelier Cologne and Carlos Huber of Arquiste. Check it out when you have a moment.

Forget about the hour of sleep you lost and look forward to spring baby…it’s right around the corner.

Seven Fragrances You Should Know This Fall

The other day as I was exiting the train station here in New York City, I looked up and realized the sun is setting earlier. While that wasn’t the first time that’s ever happened, it always catches you by surprise and it’s a sure sign fall is right around the corner. Continue reading

The Weekend Getaway

A quick weekend getaway, while exciting because it breaks the routine, should also have some comforting elements as well. On a recent jump down to Philadelphia, that’s exactly what I had in mind. And while TSA restrictions didn’t apply, I’ve gotten so used to packing that way, all of my grooming necessities were airline appropriate. Continue reading
