Growing up the son of working class parents, I remember having occasion items. When Easter rolled around, it was time to get a suit because, if my mother had anything to do with it, we were surely going to church . When we came home from school, the first thing we had to do was change out of our school clothes. I even had a trench coat for church and funerals. This was a function of economics with a dash of reverence.
As I look back and smile about those days, I couldn’t help thinking about that the first time I tried Ursa Major’s Fortifying Face Balm. If you’ve been somewhat paying attention to the news, perhaps you noticed an uptick in the number of articles discussing men paying even more attention to grooming and their overall appearance. Whether the economic downturn caused them to want to set themselves apart from their colleagues to avoid pink slips or this is a trend, marketers are catching on and paying attention; big time.
It’s not enough that shaving products are scented, now there’s scented razors. You didn’t know? Read about it here. I’m not the straight razor type but a fragrant moment is always welcomed.

Now that Memorial Day is behind us, warmer days are ahead. It also means we’ll be outdoors longer enjoying the great weather. As a young man growing up, I longed for the day I could be like my dad and shave. He did it. He was (and still is) my hero. And it would mean I’m a man too. But before I even had peach fuzz, dad told me, “never put a razor on our face.” His reasoning, the hair would grow back quicker and thicker. That said, for years I avoided straight shaves. Instead, I would use an Andis Outliner II, which my barbers used to line me up and would finish me off by giving me a shave with it as well. And years later, I started using an electric shaver dad gave me, a Remington MicroScreen 2 for a closer finish. Both do the trick just fine. That is until my wife kept saying, “babe you missed a few hairs” and “I wish you’d get rid of that thing (the Remington) and get something else. In my head I always reply, “This baby works just fine.” But when an opportunity to experience my first straight shave came my way, care of Caron Paris, I decided to give it a try. Continue reading
